Butler County is in northern Iowa. It is named for General William O Butler, a hero of the Mexican American War.
The seat is Allsion, while the largest city is Parkersburg. The Shell Rock River is a major waterway.

It is bordered by Floyd, Bremer, Black Hawk, Franklin, Chickasaw, Cerro Gordo and Hardin and Grundy Counties.
